Help answer this question below.
The most important thing to consider is if your question is social or informational. A social question is one that is intended to create discussion or to let people give creative answers, but informational questions help people understand something or offer useful information about a topic.
Some examples of social questions are:
"What does blue taste like?"
"What's your favorite thing to have for breakfast?"
"How are you today?"
"If you could be a South Park character, which would you be?"
"What color is your car?"
Social questions like these belong in the Outside the Bag category.
If, however, your question (or its answers) are informational, if they could be helpful to others, please use our category finder as you post your question to find the best place for it.
Some examples of informational questions are:
"What's your favorite South Park episode?" -> South Park
(This is informational - it could help someone who is new to South Park and wants to learn more.)
"What is the capital of Canada?" -> Canada
(Informational, clearly.)
"Would you own an electric car?" -> Alternative fuel autos
(Informational: the answers are likely to discuss the advantages or disadvantages of owning an electric car.)
"What is the average price to build a garage?" -> Construction
(Informational, clearly)
Also, please do not use the "Answerbag" categories unless your question actually has something to do with Answerbag, its service, or its users.
We need your help to keep Answerbag organized. The more we can keep things where they belong, the more everyone will be able to enjoy the site!

Does *anybody* pay attention to 'category' when asking a question? Or do they, just blindly 'spin the prayer-wheel'?

I don't like the new What's your favorite category in the Outside the Bag listing because a lot of questions that just start off that way wind up being recategorized there. Sure I would move a question to that category if it deserved it but I never tried to change one that belongs in its category. What's your favorite beer is now in the what's your favorite category instead of beer like it should be.
My strategy to keep legitimate category questions where I basically ask for a favorite is to reword it and make sure the word favorite is not in there. I believe that something which is inside the bag should remain inside the bag. Does anyone agree or disagree with this?
