  • I live in New York, in the US, and I'm in 11th grade. Here, we have to go through 12 years of proper school, and 2 years of "non proper school"(excluding college). The first 2 year of school are pre-kindergarden and kindergarden. Parents don't have to bring their kids to pre-k, but a lot parents do so they can get their kids used to going to school and being away from their parents. Kindergarden is a little more than that, and I think parents have to do this. In these 2 grades, you don't do any learning, its all play!! Then, the grades are 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd, grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, etc... until you hit 12th grade, your last grade. You are allowed to quit school when you are 16, which is your 3rd year of High School. Instead of going to College, you're allowed to go to a trade school called BOCES, which teachers you cosmetics, carpentry, nursing(in case you can't go or afford college). This is how your average student in NY would go to school...

Pre Kindergarden-1st grade: Franklin Early Childhood Center
2nd grade-5th Grade: Hewlett Elementary School
6th grade-8th grade: Woodmere Middle School
9th grade-12th grade: Hewlett High School
    Community College-2 years
    or
    College(university)-4 years
    or
    Trade School-BOCES

To sum everything up. In NY, we HAVE to go through 10 years of school, going through 4 different schools. You don't have to go to your last 2 year of High School, and you can get your GED(this might make it harder for you to get into colleges)

College and BOCES is optional to go to, and you can go to numerous colleges until you find the one right for you.

    I hope this helps!!
