    Religion is potentially either one. It's been used to justify all sorts of evil. But it's also produced enormous good.

    Religion is basically formalized spirituality, and spirituality is mankind's progress towards wholeness and integration. Depending on your particular orientation, this might mean a special relationship with God and humanity, or integration with some other thing which transcends individuality.

    Done well, religion fosters spiritual development. Done poorly, it divides us into warring factions who will stop at nothing to be right and punish those who disagree with us.
