One reason is the same reason everyone opposes electing building inspectors, bridge inspectors, health inspectors, doctors for the CDC, and NASA scientists. The general public isn't qualified to judge their expertise or competence.

The main reason, however, is really more the objection to judges having to stand for RE-election. A judge is supposed to render legal decisions based solely on the law and the evidence, regardless of how popular or unpopular a decision might be. Judges who are afraid of being voted out of office are more likely to cave to popular opinion, media pressure, and the like. Also, elected judges in general are notorious for being too skittish about being overturned on appeal - because even though no one may know or care about the merits of the case, the challenger is sure to make a big deal simply of the fact that the incumbent was overruled umpteen times by the appellate court.
