Can a psychologist with a phd perscribe anti depressants or should i go to my regular doctor?

    Psychologists can't prescribe meds....Psychiatrists can. So, if you need anti-depressants....you need either a GP or Psychiatrist. If your Psychologist is prescribing meds....I'ld be looking into their background rather closely....

    • There is "a growing movement for SOME psychologists to have LIMITED prescibing privileges" but this is not commonly accepted at this time and is a relatively new "movement". That is why when prescriptions are required as a part of a patient's therapy, generally the psychologist will work closely with a Psychiatrist (these professionals are much more versed in the brain/body response to medications...that's part of what makes them Psychiatrists)
