My favorite comment hacks, all in one place:

    • Line break in comments:

    • Bullet in comments (or answers): •

    • Breaking the 1000-char comment limit: edit offline, then post a single line comment with the minimum chars, e.g. "....". Then click Edit, and paste your epistle into the comment field. If the comments are coming fast and furious from others, it's a good idea to refresh your browser before posting, to make sure you've seen what they have to say first. No more cross-posts in long discussions!

    • Every once in a while, something should be Trademarked™ (™)

    • Arrows:
    ↑↑
    ↓↓

    &rarr →
    ← ←

There are many more fun HTML "entity codes" you can insert in comments and answers, here's a list:

    • You forgot to leave a space I assume with the line break. It's showing up as nothing.

    • I edited the answer recently, that messed it up. Now I've un-messed it, thanks for the heads-up.

    • Welcome, and thanks for the link.
I use the non-breaking space often, but the bullet and cent mark can come in handy and are pretty easily remembered. I'll probably continue to use charmap for most things.

      These are very useful; thanks.

On skirting the 1000-char limit for comments:
      • Edit offline using a plain text editor like Notepad or Metapad.
      • When finished editing, turn off Word-Wrap just before you select and copy your text.
      • Paste entire block into the AB comment box (CTRL+V).
[Yes, it will truncate at 1000 characters but ignore it]
      • Click "Post Comment"
      • Click EDIT
      • Select All (CTRL+A), then Delete.
      • Re-paste your comment (it's still in the clipboard buffer so just hit CTRL+V again).
On the second paste it will take it all (will not truncate).

This looks like a lot of work but it's actually faster, since you don't have to type anything. Just paste, Post, Edit, Clear, and re-paste.

If that seems too complicated I'll just slink away like the uninvited wolf at the moose kill. :(

    • Well you're right, it's faster -- IF AB doesn't crash when pasting the first time. The reason I don't do that is because, when it's in a bad mood, pasting a 1000-char comment tends to make it even crankier. The possibility exists that you'll end up posting half of what you wanted to say (or if you're me, 1/4!) and end up having to explain yourself.

So if you wanna save keystrokes and have a high risk tolerance, go for it! :)

    • I haven't had a problem with crashes from any cause in a few months. The main problem I experience is in trying to upload images. But thanks for the warning. :)

      EDIT:
Wait--are you talking about the failure to post an answer or comment? When AB just wanders off like Grandpa with Alzheimer's into the forest and your comment is never seen again? Yes, I have experienced that, but not related to the SIZE of a post. It always seems to be random. When it starts doing that, I do a quick CTRL+A, CTRL+C just before hitting the Post Comment button.

    • I've seen it both ways: the site takes forever to post the longer comment, and/or the comment just gets lost. I agree that I haven't seen the former for a while, I think they fixed that much. But the other reason I do this is because if the site is slow to post the 2nd paste, the incomplete version may be seen by others in the thread, especially when it's hot and heavy. Anyway, we're here talking about whether North-North-West is better than East-North-West, yes? Either way, the wind blows from somewhere over there :)

    • OK. :)

    • BTW, you are the 2nd person I've seen on AB in my time who as used 'bioflavonoids' in his username. I take this as a sign of significant changes on the wind.

    • I'm about to change it again. It has to flow, like a river, always changing.
      :)

    • (I tested these here, then deleted them. So here's something in its place: I would if I could but I can't so I shan't.)

    • Only you were used. The rest of the users in this thread were innocent bystanders. Collateral damage, if you will.

I strike again! (No, wait. This is actually my first strike. Okay, I 'll revise.) Again I'll strike! (But probably not.)

    • By the way, you used "ie" incorrectly in your answer, which means "in other words" or "that is to say." "For example" is indicated by "eg." A friendly F your I.

    • Hey, thanks again. By the way, have you experimented to see if questions can also be posted longer than the nominal character limits?

    • I haven't. I don't ask many questions :) But I suspect the only candidate would be like the comment hack... post and then edit. Somebody needs to be brave enough to test it out... if I ask a question, I'll have to put up with the answers, and that makes my flubitis act up.

    • I know what you mean. For those few who already know it all, I realize that questions are merely superfluous and sometimes just pretentious ways to gain points -- and to demonstrate the fact that they already know it all. But sometimes one has a Q that won't quite fit in the box, and I, for one, find that answering one's own Q merely to explain it ... seems even sillier than asking the abbreviated Q in the first place.

And then there's that whole idea of rating answers from those who don't already know it all, of course, as you pointed out ...
