I put my car in the shop for repairs to my transmission and now, almost a year later, my car is still there. Can I sue this garage for the mental anguish this has caused me? I have paid these people in full.

You can only sue for the money that you paid to the shop. It only becomes an issue of mental anguish if they have been mentally or verbally abusive, (i.e. if they were mean or nasty to you every time you asked for the status of the repair) It also depends on how often you have asked them to finish the repair or refund your money. If you have not approached them over either matter over the course of the year then the court would rule that you brought the mental anguish on yourself for simply not demanding that they honor their commitment.
