  • That depends on whether you are talking about One Day cricket or Test match (5 day) cricket, since the skill set required is a little different for each and most players excel more in one than the other. Purely in test match cricket terms, players like Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan and Rahul Dravid of India are consistent accumulators of runs, but are perhaps not explosive enough to be the top one day batsmen. Jacques Kallis of South Africa probably falls into this category too. On the other hand, there are players like Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) and Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa) who are explosive in the short game but lack the patience or technique to score consistently in test matches.

However there are some players who consistently show excellence in both forms of the game, and uppermost among them currently is Australian captain Ricky Ponting. He just makes batting look easy whenever he walks out to bat. Other players of this calibre are Sachin Tendulkar of India and Brian Lara of the West Indies (he holds the record for most runs scored in the history of Test cricket, as well as being the only batsman to score 400 in a test match); however there current form is less spectacular than Ricky Ponting's so I will give him the number 1 spot at this point in time.
