    An Educated Optimist

As a teacher, I am not in favor of corporal punishment (though I feel the need to point out that at least in my state, it is not illegal -- just rarely used). However, I'm not against it because I think it's child abuse -- I don't. I think there are many reasons why it's not the best choice now, though.

First, it puts teachers in a precarious position. In a litigious society, I don't want to give my kids' parents any more reason than they might already have come up with to accuse me of doing something wrong in their child's life. It's asking for trouble.

Second, I think that in order to spank a child, you have to love that child. I know not everybody agrees with spanking, and as I don't have kids, I can't tell you how I'll feel about it when it's my kid. What I can say with some certainty is that teachers are not the right ones to do it.

Finally, I think that, especially as kids get older, we need consequences that more closely model the real world into which they are going to enter, and not the artificial one that education can create. We want the kids to be motivated in the same way they will be in their future, and I think we can safely say that corporal punishment does not mirror life after graduation.

    • Absolutely. I do not get hit by my friends. And they would definitely not qualify as friends if they did that to me. In real life, if we don't like something. We move away from it. We don't step on it untill it's dead.
