92 Ford F150, 8 Cy. Wont crank, only sputters w/blk smoke. 24 hrs fired right up, 3 mi down the road quit. Again sputtered black smoke. Added a new fuel pump, fired right up. 18 mi later quits. At the shop idles fine, but on the road, quits. Why?

    92 = fuel injection..
    Black smoke = Running rich
    Start up but quit = problem when it warms up.
    I would try replacing the coolant temperature sensor. Make sure it is the one the engine computer uses, not the one for the temp gage, some vehicles have both.
    Just my guess.
