Every computer on the Internet has an IP address that identifies it. An IP address (in IP version 4) is made up of four numbers of up to three digits separated by periods, like 123.456.789.123. Each of those numbers can have a value between 0 and 255. Researchers are working on a specification for IP v6 that will allow a larger number of addresses to exist because, like phone numbers in the US, IP addresses are starting to run out.
