Question

Help answer this question below.

I am missing a bunch of Windows programs like Paint, Calculator, WordPad and all the games. I tried re-installing them from my Windows disc but it doesn't work. It put the programs back in the start menu but they don't work. It is a valid copy of XP Pro.

My guess is the update that installed was sp3 for XP and many times for a system that has been up and running for some time it can produce a error that system cannot recover from. you will have to do a full system install/format and all more than likely.
just make sure system is set to boot from CD (in CMOS) and put CD back and reload.
sadly you will lose all data.
You can try to back up as much information as possible first if you can.
