Evolution works very slowly, when it is happening at all. 2000 years is a very short amount of time in terms of evolutionary change. It probably seems like a lot longer if you believe that the world is only 6000 yeasr old.

Evolution is a function of the environment. Changes occurred more quickly in the past because physical form had much more influence on who lived long enough to reproduce and to protect those with similar genes who were going to reproduce.

That's not much of a factor in this day and age where your physical form does not have that much influence on whether you wind up having children and perpetuating your genotype.

Nowadays, evolution is speeding up among memes rather than genes.
