There are two types of screw shot. the first is the slow screw where the cue ball is made to travel back up to 8 inches or so. the second is the deep screw shot, where the cue ball is required to travel more than one or two feet to its desired position (in a straight line)

Whilst I agree hitting the ball low and hard will achieve either type of screw shot, you will get varying results every time without following one simple guideline...

The cue must be pushed right through the cue ball...when you strike the cue ball do not allow yourself to stop pushing the cue through at the point of impact (this is called checking the cue)

this is what generates the desired backspin, by allowing the cue to push through at the point of impact. watch any proffessional snooker player and you will notice that the cue always pushes through at the moment of impact.

A good practice shot to try is to place an object ball directly in the middle of the table with the cue ball around one of the corner pockets.
Line the cue ball and object ball up so that both balls are in a direct line with the adjacent pocket. Play to pot the object ball and screw the cue ball back so as to "scratch" (pocket the white) this will help you judge how straight your cue action is and should help you on your way to judging the various force required for each screw shot you may encounter in the future.
