When buying a used PS2, are there any versions/models that I should avoid?

    Very early models (see answer to a question that list model types) that use cheap components (i.e the laser assembly)

    Earlier models are much more susceptible to the rather annoying "Disk Read Error" where envirnmental particles, i.e dust, can contaminate the laser lens.

    later models use a better laser component that is less susceptible to this rather eroneous problem. but remember that ALL playstations are fallible to this problem over time, but the later models can survive longer in dustier environments.
