It would depend greatly on how badly the drain is clogged, and with what; and with what “caustic cleaner” you tried to use to clear it.

Lye is a very common substance for use in drain cleaners. It is highly alkaline, and usually tends to be effective at dissolving many common causes of drain obstruction, such as hair, paper, grease, etc.

I grew up in Santa Barbara, where the water is rather alkaline. Because of the deposits left by the water, lye-based drain cleaners are nearly useless there; and it was usually necessary to resort to an acid-based cleaner, usually based on sulfuric or hydrochloric acid. At some point, I made the discovery that “muriatic acid”, of which you could buy a gallon jug at a pool-supply place for about $3 or $4, was almost exactly the same thing as a “professional-strength” hydrochloric-acid-based drain cleaner found only at plumbing supply places for about $10 for a quart bottle.
