Our kittens started using the litter box right away -- it's an enclosed type with stairs and a ventilation hole from Petsmart. Perhaps you should try that sort of litter box as opposed to changing the actual litter. We've had to correct them a few times, if one pees somewhere we make them sniff it and then put them in the litter box so they associate the two.
But no litter is going to jump out of the box and chase your cat around to stop it going in the wrong spot. Litter training takes time, and unfortunately there's always the risk your cat will have an accident or just decide she wants to pee in the corner.
