The engine will still be on drive mode ,however since the accelerator is not in use, the draft will not be that powerful; but close enough as though the vehicle is in an idling mode/neutral. This however wont stress the engine.I have been using Auto transmission car for the past 15 years and never had I encountered problem on the engine.Well, again there is nothing wrong putting the lever to N if you desire ,however it will take a difference of a few seconds less if you maintain on the D mode mentioned.
