If there is visible grease coming from behind the lugnut protecter (hubcap), on my F150. What does this mean? Do I need to have the wheel bearings re-greased? The truck is rear wheel drive.

    It means that you have a leaking wheel seal. You will need to replace the seal. While you're there, do the bearings too, because they'll more than likely go soon anyway especially if they've spent any significant amount of time low on lubrication. From the sounds of things, they have.

    • Actually, your truck has a gasket and not a wheel seal. Same basic thing though, keeps the lubrication (gear oil or grease) in the axle. It should only leak from behind the brake drum though, so yours leaking where it is tells me something else is wrong. As long as there's no damage from lack of lubrication, you should be looking at 3 or 4 hours of labor (whatever the going rate is in your area) and the price of the gasket (which may just be tube silicone, don't remember for sure.) If you drive it this way the damage will be severe and cost lots. Get it to a shop!
