In general terms a small business is one that:

    - Is independently owned and operated.
    - Is not dominant in its field of operation

However qualification to this category must comply with certain criteria in regards to its number of employees and its annual sales, and this is not a worldwide standard, in other words the criteria varies from one country to another.

In the US, the criteria in annual sales and number of employees is even different from one industry or economic sector to another.

To learn more about the specific criteria used in the US visit the website of the Small Business Administration (http://www.sba.gov)
