What's the deal with marijuana smokers and April 20th?

April 20th is known as 420 to smokers around the world. I was a stoner for over half of my life and we would try to spark one up even at the time 4:20. I have heard that 420 is the police code for marijauna like 187 is to homicide. It really boils down to an excuse for the red eyed people of world to sit back and burn one.
