You're reading How do you know if a Church is a cult religion?
Comments
I'd add -- it's a cult if there's a central charismatic figure that's not grooming other leaders, can't work with other leaders, and who's respect you crave.

Exactly!

I'm not quite sure what the first sentence means, "if...your represent their causes or ideals for the world." If you believe the ideas or ideals are true and you express those beliefs as your own, then, by definition being a Democrat or a Republican would mean you are part of a cult.

That's certainly true with those who vote across the board, according to their party choices, without using their own brain to think for themself!

Jesus advocated separation form the world, blood family and your own self if you were going to follow him. Your only real friends were members of his group. He also drew people away from their chosen professions and life goals.

No question christianity started out as a personality cult -- but those things Jesus advocated 2000 years ago see very little practice today -- Christianity is very much a family oriented *religion*.

Then it should be called something like family time.
by Jerry Montelius on February 6th, 2007
By that definition christianity itself is a cult.
Luke 18 reads "Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake" KJV
So christianity started out a cult and became a religion when it left these early tenets and gained masse recognition?

That's how I see it. By the way, it didn't gain mass recognition... many people were killed for "not believing" -- fear factor was a major motivator for conversion once it became the official religion of the Roman emperors.
