Who agrees with me that we should do away with Community Leaders? I was one for half a day and was terrified with the extreme power that I wielded and thought to myself that no user should have this much power. Shouldn't we just have troll patrols?

  • Fine with me. It would be nice if AB were spam and troll free. It would be great if people wouldn't get into fights that bring the whole bag down.

Extreme power without checks and balances? I beg to differ. Rich reviews everything we submit and he has even disagreed with some of our calls and reversed decisions made by CLs. We can be penalty boxed like everyone else too.

The thing that riles people is flagging. Flagging can be done by anybody, so it's a bit unfair to blame CLs for all of the flagged material here. We do not review the flags, that is done by staff moderators.

We do not make decisions based on whims as asserted. We make decisions based on guidelines provided to us by Rich. We also make decisions based on feedback we receive from other users. If I get a ton of e-mail about a specific issue, I look into it and handle the situation as appropriate based on the guidelines.

The only thing that is NOT checked by Rich is deletion of comments. Not a huge amount of power there IMHO. Most of what is removed is just vitriolic tantrum throwing and severely offensive content. One would think that adults could argue without resorting to calling each other nasty names, but that isn't the case.

EDIT: I wanted to address some of the concerns about comment removal and a few other things that have come up here. When comments are deleted it is for a VERY good reason. It is also very rare that this is done.

I have removed comments that were racial/sexual orientation slurs, threatening (one person expressed a desire to rape somebody's daughter for example), or extremely offensive or graphic in detail. Usually, the person the comments were directed at is hurt and does not feel comfortable with all of AB seeing such nasty things and a CL or the staff is contacted.

A lot of people feel like it's censorship, but the reality is that the site has Terms of Use and certain expectations for appropriate behavior. If that rubs anyone the wrong way, they can always ask the staff to relax those standards. I have seen some very ugly and hurtful stuff and think it is good that we have the ability to delete those comments.

I also agree that it might not be a bad idea for there to be some accountability for comment removal. All other CL activity is closely monitored by AB-Staff and this should be no exception. However, it is rare and the staff has enough to review as it is (flags, feedback, etc.).

Having the ability to recategorized instantly is necessary because a lot of content that is appropriate for AB4Adults, but not for AB, ends up in the wrong place. It needs to be moved ASAP. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my in-box gets flooded when this happens. There is nothing wrong with Adult content as long as it is in the right place.

If you feel that the role of CLs should be amended to only patrol for trolls and spammers, feel free to suggest it. That is 90% of what we do anyway.

    • Does he really check every single word on here? That must be a hell of a lot of work. :O

    • He checks everything CLs Penalty Box people for and reviews the spam reports. . .I'm sure it is a lot of work, CLs practically do nothing compared to Rich :) Staff moderators check each flag in addition (not just those of CLs, but ALL flags). And we all take our share of criticism.

    • I take it that's what he does for a living then? Lol I didn't know that.

    • No actually it isn't, that's the scary part. He has a teaching job in Hawaii, can't recall the details though.

    • I personally have seen you Andy as the one and only CL that I'm aware of who to the best of my knowledge have always wielded your CL power with a rare sense of fairness and some much needed sense of humor.
I have seen CLs that seem to have power trips, and there are some CLs I no doubt am not even aware of.
I honestly think they ought to be listed on a link from the main page or in some way the whole community can tell who is and who isn't without having to keep a running total in ones head.
      Or am I missing something?
      .
Of course with all due respect I by NO means monitor ALL YOUR activity Andy, so realistically I may just be giving you the benefit of the doubt.

    • Awww, thanks Jack, that is really nice. I tend to be lenient, after 4 years on AB, not much bothers me. I am not easily offended and have a sense of humor too. The current ones have orange starburst shaped badges and they are LynfromNM, Tani, Galeanda, and yours truly. However, Joel and Rich are known to prowl the bag as well and actively assist in the CL process.

    • Are Joel and Rich the staff moderators?
      .
I used to moderate at another site but I think the moderators there were approximately equivalent to the CL's here and the people (including the site creator and owner) there with the most power there were called administrators.

    • Staff moderators here are undergrad students who volunteer to review flags. CLs take out the trash (spam, offensive content, etc.) and recommend PB sentences to the big kahunas (Rich and Joel). I suppose they are the site administrators and they review and manage all activity by both CLs and staff mods (Rich does actually--I think Joel is dealing with the tech end these days). We aren't powerful, but Rich and Joel are :)

    • Thanks Andy. :)
