hi there, I'm pretty sure they do have to - seeing as my husband is in the Army and certainly has taxes taken out of his check

You are correct, they will take it out of your check until you file exempt. Wages are not taxable and never have been. That is why they call it Income tax not labor tax. Labor is not taxable according to the current tax codes and laws. Legally all you have to do is file. Why do you think that there is a box to check off on your W2 that says Exempt?
by American4FreeHealth on April 11th, 2008
I thought it was there because you expected to be exempt for taxes because you were below a certain income range; for instance, I usually fall in that range so I simply fill my W2 out as exempt.

This is incorrect, American4FreeHealth.
Servicemembers are NOT "exempt" from taxes. They do get tax breaks, however, and some are quite considerable. But they are responsible and proud taxpayers overall, like most other citizens.
