Does it mean anything if you're alone in a nearly empty bus/cinema, a woman sits next to you and then ignores you like nothing is going on?

Even on a subconscious level, humans naturally have a desire to make contact with others. Sometimes, when a person has recently gone through a period of grief, they want to be close to others without actually making verbal or physical contact; simply absorbing the security of close proximity, without the complicated introductions and explanations of self and situation. Going to see a movie, especially one without a audience, indicates a desire to escape, whether for only a few hours, or forever. Whether you realize it or not, you were her best friend in the world for a few hours.

As awful as it may sound, it is wise not to talk to a person in such condition (assuming grief is the focus), as it would only extend her time of grief by sharing it with you, forever associating you with her time of grief. Once she reaches some level of recovery, she will thank you and depart, as you will bring back bad memories of her time of weakness.

    • This might be true sometimes, but not nearly often enough to decide to stop talking to people that sit next to you.
