I am going for an interview for a post office job. i was arrested in 2001 for shoplifting. i know they will check my criminal record and is going to come up. how should i answer the interviewer if he questions me about the incident? i am so

    Truthfully.

    As you said, they are going to check your criminal record. It's much better they hear it from you, with your "reasons" and feelings and remorse about it than from a cold factual police report about it, isn't it?
