NASA has a whole site dedicated to how astronauts are selected. Here's a summary of the basic process:

    1. Applicants must apply for the position
    2. Those that qualify are then evaluated by a discipline panel
    3. After that, should you be recommended by the panel, you go through training for a number of years.

Part of the training involes learning how to survive in water, and exposure to high-atmosphere situations and the problems involved. You also get to experience a simulation of space flight through a jet plane nose diving at a certain angle.

The next part of the training has you undergo simulations using the orbiter (What they call the space shuttle.) Also, you learn to work with Mission Control as a team.
