It's a bad move. If someone defends against your Fool's Mate, you're in a terrible starting position. Good answer though.

The fastest possible checkmate is actually two moves, but this does not happen very often compared to the four move mate.

idoun points out you can mate in 2 moves. Fools mate as described correctly here by James is the same thing. Each side only does two moves - so you are right idoun1 but David is right too because that is a total of four moves. Its just confusing as to whether you should count blacks moves in addition to whites.
