    Burnt offering is based on the Biblical term.. sacrifice.

    The Israelite sacrificial system made offerings to a deity
    using animals or vegetable life.
    This was done in a public ceremony twice a day.
    Animals were always male and completely burned.

    In the Roman Catholic translation burned offerings are mentioned
    as holocaust about 150 times. The Hebrew word for burnt offerings
    can be translated to holocaust.

    Interestingly the word holocaust is never mentioned
    in the King James Bible.

    Origins of the phrase is Greek meaning to be burnt whole.

    Any holocaust it seems is a burnt offering to a god..

    Hope this helps.
