It sounds like a suspension spring broke.

Labor to remove the spring/strut assembly and replace the spring will be about 1.5 hours.

A new spring will be about $85 if it's the front, about $60 if it's the rear.

    Good luck

    • Thanks; that's good news! I have to wait until tomorrow for the shop to open and give me an estimate, but I was a bit nervous about it. I should sleep better thinking that it won't cost me a fortune.
And congratulations for being the first person to answer my very first question!

    • You're welcome...and welcome to Answerbag.
      .
Note: When you get the spring repaired, the shop will probably recommend new shock/strut units. It's not the worst idea given that they are 9 years old, but you can skip that if you're short on funds.

    • Alas. It was the ball joint that broke. And the tow truck managed to wreck pretty much everything in that vicinity. So I slept well Sunday night, but I woke up to an estimate of $1300. And I'd just paid off my last credit card, too. <sigh>

    • Wow, that's unusual...Ball joints don't normally break without giving a *lot* of warning (various noises).
      .
I'm sorry you had such rotten luck.
