It's a difficult question to answer, because "freedom" is a relative concept. A situation which one culture views as freedom might be viewed by another culture as slavery and oppression. There is no absolute standard of freedom.

Comparatively, at least, my perception is that we enjoy a high degree of freedom. We exercise free speech and a free press; we burn flags; we are not bought and sold as property.

However, you could also make a strong case that we are slaves to the media, our political culture, and the American dream.

    • Also to the central banking system... mortgages are a type of enslavement for most, as is the perpetual debt/credit industry...

    • Good points, both anon and bowling. Media, politics, banking, I guess these are the price we pay for the life we have. Maybe it is really different in France or Australia.
