My 14 year old son came to me recently, and told me that he is either bisexual or gay. He has never had a girlfriend, and the boy that he thinks he is in love with, he met online. He wants him to come visit us (from out of state) this summer. What to do?

It depends if he is wanting this boy to stay in your home. If he does, explain to him that you do not let strangers stay for visits, whether they be a potential boyfriend or a potential girlfriend.

If this boy will be staying in your area, say that you would be glad to let them meet personally in a public place.

If he is within a 2 hour drive, say that you could drive to a midpoint place for them to meet in person.

Make sure you let him know that this is not because it is a boy instead of a girl he wants to meet, but because he met them online and, unfortunately, sometimes people online do not always tell the truth.

    • This seems to be very much the most reasonable answer to me. I don't think 14 is too young to date, although parental assistance is definitely required.

And I don't see why this should be treated any different from meeting a girl.
