You're reading How did Giada de Laurentis and Sandra Lee get on the Food Network? Why are they still there?
Comments
Giada is NOT Oscar's granddaughter...she's Dino's granddaughter. Dino De Laurentiis is a movie producer http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0209569/

I realized it as soon as I typed it. But it was uneditable back in the old days of this posting.

That's understandable...the only reason I know that is because my wife insisted that Oscar and Giada were related, and I was skeptical, so I had to look it up.
Regardless of the error, your point still stands...maybe even stronger, because her grandfather IS a famous producer, after all. I'm sure that couldn't have HURT her chances of getting on TV.

A chef doesn't not have to be overweight to know how to make good food. That is the stupidest generalization I can think people make. It's a thing called a balanced diet.
Giada knows what she is doing. She makes authentic Italian food that is easy to make and doesn't require hunting for unusual or hard to find ingredients. While Dino is a famous movie producer, Giada chose not to be in movies. Food Network chose her because of her work, not because she is an Italian producer's grand daughter.
Sandra Lee is, well, cheap. I'm ok with using store bought things if you are in a hurry and need a quick fix. But a constant diet of Sandra's food would probably lead to kidney stones (and maybe some mild alcoholism). I've tried a recipe or two of hers and while they sound good in theory, they usually lack in taste.
