You're reading If a batsman offers no stroke and the ball reached the boundary, what is the ruling? Is this 4 byes or no runs since the batsman offered no stroke?
Comments
It is considered evasive action - trying to avoid the ball, as opposed to "padding up" which is trying to block the ball with your body without offering a shot.

More specifically, if the batsman makes an attempt to avoid being struck by the ball then byes are awarded. If the batsman leaves the ball alone and the 'keeper is beaten, the ball is dead, unless it's a no ball or wide. I have seen 4 no-balls awarded, have never actually awarded same in practice (I'm a professional umpire).
