If a neighbor has the same brand of wireless gear as I do, can we keep our two networks separate, or will we both end up having one big network between the two of us?

Regardless of the brand you will end up having one big network or a big conflict between the networks if they are both configured using the default settings. Provided that you use your own settings which will more than likely be different from your neighbor, you shouldnt have a problem keeping both networks separate. There is also restrictions that you can put on your network making yourself visable and accessible to only certain users via the mac address on the wireless card itself.

    • This is why leaving things on default is BAD!
Also, any cracker with a brain already knows the default passwords on many different makes/models of various types of hardware.

I recommend you both take a little time to RTFM and secure your respective networks.
