First off, make sure you have the right memory card for the game - PS1 games will require PS1 memory cards even though you're playing on a PS2. If it's a PS2 game, you must have a PS2 memory card - PS1 memory cards won't work with it.

Assuming you've got the right cards for your system, there are two tests you need to perform:

    1. Borrow a memory card from a friend and try saving files to it and then reading them. If this does not work, your PS2 is probably broken and you'll need to get it fixed.

    2. If other memory cards work in your system, go over to a friend's house and test your memory card in their system. If this does not work, you know that your memory card is busted and needs to be replaced.
