    age isn't a limiting factor,

but is your body any good? compared to a 20 yr old's?

to be a master, you have to compete with young blood who probably want it more than you.. you have to practice lots and it's physically demanding.. but you probably already knew this

to start martial arts at 30 is late.. and if you haven't started at 30, 5 years of training (which is a lot, but very little to kids who begin early..)

when i started, at 16 in muay thai, my instructor told me kids start as young as 6..

so.. depends.. what kind of art do you want to master? Nothing is ever too late, if you have the heart..

but can your body handle it?

i mean.. Sure.. Age is but a number.. but your body DOES grow old.. your brain DOES grow slow..

no matter how good you are.. you do age.. so how bad do you want it??

if you want something bad enough and can prove it, then you will be a master.

    • Your view as the view of most people of mastery is not in keeping with the martial way, so called mastery goes far beyond the physical, it lays hidden for those who understand. it is the merging of mind and body and is called zai teki. Only a hand full have ever reached this level. If you reach it then you might say you have mastered the way.

    • I wrote an answer to this question 2 years ago, so this comment is a new reflection and also a reply. I do believe in masters of arts, but I don't believe in applying your idea of mastery to all styles of the "martial way". You may call it the merging of the mind and body, but I may call it the fighting spirit. No matter how much the mind wants it, the merging of a poor body is also a factor. The fighting spirit can push the physical limit beyond what it can handle but this is only in conjunction of the type of body you have. My view does keep with the martial way, but I believe it does so in a way that it approaches it as as a balance where the heart wants as much as the body. This is how my training in Muay Thai makes me see things. The Japanese approach to this is different than those in Thailand, but I like to think mine is much more down to earth. Everyone is a master, but it takes years in training, a developed body, and a strong will. Not a handful, just few who want it.
