You're reading Do you think that capital punishment is murder?
Comments
So well said tripwire. If ever the taking of anothers life was premeditated, it is by the authorities who plan the execution of prisoners, who may or may not be guilty. The answer that "hey we may get it wrong sometimes but what about the victims", does not justify the taking of another life, innocent or otherwise. Only a barbaric society would continue with this policy.

Thanks Ozchrissy :) You're so right! Isn't it ironic that the nations where the use of capital punishment is still alive and kicking, (scuse the pun-ahem) tend to be the ones (barring China) that are more strongly influenced by their religion, and profess to being morally superior? I'm not religious at all, but even if I were, I wouldn't have any trouble understanding the, "Thou shalt not kill!" commandment, or have the Americans been reading the fine print at the bottom of that one? Cheers :)

It is my understanding that the original text does not read, "Thou shalt not kill", but instead "Thou shalt not murder". In the law, there are many variables that can determine whether the taking of human life can actually be considered murder.

Good point, but I don't see its relevance here..

Just saying that there is a big difference between killing and murder. If the actual commandment was "Thou shalt not kill", and equated any type of killing to murder, then anyone who has taken human life would be guilty of murder; regardless of the situation.

The statement about Illinois sounded unbelievable so I did some checking and as it usually turns out with things that are unbelievable it is not true. In 2003 Governor George Ryan communted the sentences of all 156 prisoners on death row with the impetus being 13 cases where the verdict had been overtured, between 1977 and 2003 (26 years). Some journalism class had nothing to do with it. You may want to check your sources a bit closer in the future.
