A receiver is made up of two devices: a tuner and an amplifier.

The tuner receives radio signals and decodes them for play on your speakers. However, the tuner alone puts out a very low-level signal that is not strong enough to play on your speakers.

So, the signal in a receiver is then fed from the tuner to the amplifier which magnifies the signal so that it will be at a suitable level for your speakers. To keep it simple:

    Tuner + amplifier = receiver.
