How does a cyst form?

    That kind of depends on the cyst. If you are talking a sebaceous cyst (i.e. in the skin) then what happens is the oil gland gets blocked, or plugged up, and the oily secretions (sebum) can't escape, swell and distort the sebaceous gland, and so a cyst forms. If you are talking about, say, an ovarian cyst, then that can form in several ways - however the principle is similar in all cases. Fluid of some kind gathers in a location, cannot escape and so a "bubble" forms. The exact mechanism, however, depends on the exact kind of cyst you are referring to.

    • Why do cysts return after they've been removed (by a dermatologist)? It seems like after a few months they're back and sometimes worse than before- don't all cysts have stem like things that attach them to where they are- what gives?
