Well, thats hard to answer because Taoism does not promote itself. Although there is ONE Taoist "leader" that is important. Let me tell you a short story of the first known Taoist "leader", Lao Tzu (lOW-su). Lao Tzu was the librarian of an ancient emperor. He was very wise, and for the most part he kept to himself. When he became very old ,and guessed that his death was near, he decided to leave to the mountains where he would spend the rest of his life in solitude. When he arrived at the gates of the empire, the gard demanded that he write down all of his knowledge, or he would not let him leave. So Lao Tzu obliged, and wrote down a scripture that later came to be known as the Tao Te Jing (dOW-de-ching). After Lao Tzu left, he was never seen again. What Lao Tzu wrote down was basically the Taoist version of the Bible (even though it was written WAY before the bible). The Tao Te Jing was just a compilation of short sayings that describe the Taoism way of life.

Well, that is the long answer to a short question. I hope that this is what you were asking for.

    • i heard something similar about lao tzu, except he was with a caravan and when the boarder gaurd asked him for his most valuable asset as payment, lao tzu replied the only thing i have of value is my knowledge (he had a whole bunch of things with the caravan and he valued his knowledge more than any of them, or was smart enough to trick the guard so he didnt have to give him anything? lol.) so the guard thought for a moment, and asked him as payment to write down all of his knowledge and give it to him.
