VPN is short for Virtual Private Network. VPNs allow remote users to log in to a network, usually that of their company, to use company resources that would normally only be available to users who are physically in the building, on the company network. They typically require a user to log in using a username and password to authenticate.

As of late 2003, there are two major types of VPNs being used, IPSec and SSL. IPSec is generally regarded to be more robust and secure, and is more suited for giving remote users access to file servers. SSL VPNs are better suited for giving remote users access to web-based resources, such as a company intranet.
