  • They are a good resource to show you what is available in the job market. As far as putting your resume out there and having employers come to you, that's a mighty large sea of resumes, so I wouldn't count on the employers coming to you. Having said that, I got my current job four years ago by having a resume on Monster.
  • I did not find Hotjobs very useful, but Monster is great. I found a job posting on Monster and applied for it and was subsequently hired. When I left that position, I posted my resume and applied for jobs posted. The phone rang off the hook. In less than a week I had several interviews and even started a "bidding war". I also used it as a resource to determine how much I was worth. Much to my surprise, it was $15-25k more a year than what I had been paid. Their resume' writing tips and services are also good. Overall, it is a good resource if nothing else. Having said that, I had success with it because what I do is highly specialized and employees in my line of work with proper credentials are hard to come by.
  • Places like Monster and Hotjobs are only as good as to the same degree in which employers utilize them at any one snapshot moment in time. Consequently, if you find yourself in a position that you are utilizing these sites and you're not obtaining the desired results, then you need to further expand your usage of other sites and places. Personally, I don't think it's ever desirable to put all your eggs in one or two baskets but by all means, utilzing these two sites would be on my list, especially Monster. I think the key is launching a full house attack but only after you have keenly refined and tuned your resume. And the time to do some important work on your resume is when your not in a world of need. Good luck.
