  • no, it is not only considered proper -- it is proper. Wear black and you will fit in nicely.
  • My personal opinion is I would prefer to see happy colors. But I assume black is still the norm.
  • The idea is to show respect and not call attention to yourself..you want to become part of the backdrop, the woodwork..you don't want to stand out and shout "look at me look at me". Dark brown, navy blue, anything somber and not "fashionable" or "stylish" would be fine if you don't have appropriate black clothes. But red, white, bright colors..that's disrespectful in my opinion.
  • Not anymore, it used to be that you needed to be dressed in black from head to toe. And if you are a spouse or very close family member then you should wear mostly black, most do. But things have changed slightly these days, colors are permitted along with the black. I always make sure that I am mostly black with only a little color, but a lot of people dont do the ALL black thing anymore. As long as you arent in a bright red dress, you should be just fine.
  • My dad says that in india they all wear white and colours to traditional funerals.
  • Im not sure if its proper or not but I refuse to wear black. My grandfather died a year ago and I wore a dressy button down (nuetral multicolored), with a pair of khakis and black heels. Before that the last funeral I attended was for my (now) ex grandmother in law. I wore a blue dress with a pair of blue heels. I think that we should dress for the occasion, I mean we are paying our last respects to the deceased, but why should we have to wear black?
  • The last funeral I went to in May - I dressed my sons in suits and I wore a dark colored dress BUT I was amazed that most of the men (pallbearers included) did not have suitcoats on and most of the women were casually dressed. Very few people had anything black on. I think it is a sign of respect to dress nicely. The funeral home employees actually commented on how dressed up my family was and said that they just don't see that anymore.
  • Yes, it is still considered proper to wear black to a funeral. In fact any color will do except the bright and sporty colors.
  • Yes. Appearing in a clown suit, might raise some eyebrows.
  • In our country wearing black is not customary and we would wear casual with light colored.
  • Not necessarilly ALL black, but mostly black or dark colors (navy, brown, dark grays, etc.) are also considered proper as well as I have observed.
  • In my culture, we wear white.
  • Yes. Black or dark colors. Don't wear that light baby blue cocktail dress or that light brown or light grey wedding suit.
  • I don't think so. I have an all black suite that I wear to functions and I get a lot of compliments on it.
  • No , dress sense , in England anyway, seems a lot more relaxed at a funeral although a lot of people do still choose black.
  • I prefer to dress nicely for a funeral, and usually dark.
  • I think it has become more common to wear brighter colors to funerals these days. Funerals have become more concerned with the celebrating of the deceased person's life than over-emphasizing the mourning aspect of the situation.
