• The beginning of Protestantism is generally traced to Martin Luther and his 95 Theses in 1517. These were basically a protest against Catholic doctrine and practices; hence, it is called Protestantism. He was eventually excommunicated. Luther went on to found what is known as the Lutheran Church.
