  • Volcanoes are made of hardened lava(igneous rocks) When magma orginally comes to the surface through fault or dike or whatever, the magma will spread out(if mafic or intermediate) and it will harden. Thenext time it happens lava will flow out and harden until it builds up into a volcano....that is the general way..there are more specific ways but that is somewhat irrelevant to the question..
  • Poison gases and steam that pushes out molten lava.
