  • Depends i bought my own but i have been working since i was 13
  • The parents could help them get a decent used car. I think that the teen should contribute somewhat to the cost however.
  • I think it should be both. I bought my car mostly, and am paying my parents back the money that I owe. IT's a good experience, because you learn to appreciate what you work for more than what you don't work for. Im only sixteen, so I am still learning in how to drive properly.
  • Their parents should. If my parents are reading, I'll have a car for my birthday thanks. Erm, seriously. I think it'd be nice if they helped, but the individual should probably be working anyway, so they can afford petrol and stuff. So they should put money towards the car.
  • It depends on the family. Right now, a lot of families are struggling economically. It would be ideal for most to help out, but many may be trying to keep the electricity and gas on. A teenager may feel a more fulfilled by purchasing it themselves and becoming self-sufficient. Just remember, a car means more responsibility which means they are growing up. If you are a teen, Don't be in a rush. If you are a grown-up, don't let them rush too much, you'll regret it.
  • I think parents should help kids buy their own car if it's financially possible. However, it's important for kids to help purchase the car as well. It gives them a vested interest in taking good care of the care.
  • I bought my first car on my own. The only thing my mother did was co-sign the loan I think far too many teens today know nothing about responsibility
  • I think the teen should be responsible for at least a decent amount of it. If they put a good sum of money into it they will be more inclined to take care of it and be careful with/in it! My parents made me a deal that if I kept my grades up they would match me dollar for dollar on all the money I saved up towards my first car. (I ended up paying 2/3 of it so they bought me a new stereo system.:) I worked my butt off for years for that money so I took d*mn good care of that car!
  • I think the parents should bu them their first car, to help them start there own independant life.
  • Teenagers should buy the car and the parents should foot the insurance until they screw up by driving under the influence or driving drunk, excessive speeding etc.
  • The teenager should foot the bill for both car and insurance. The parent should be there for back up only and sparely at that. I have seen to many accidents by teenagers and high performance cars because their parents footed the bill. Buy a sport car that can do 150 mph and hand it over to a teenager, well that is exactly what the teenager will do...100 plus MPH. Teenagers would be the best drivers in the world, if they had the same judgement and risk assessment as a 45 year old driver.
  • Neither, until the teenager is mature enough to accept the responsibilities of the rules of the road.
  • I think they should both pay, e.g. parents buy a used car, teenager pays for gas and upkeep.
  • I bought my own car.
  • The parent should definitely buy a car for their son/daughter if they need a car.
