  • Structurally, cylinders are more resilient than shapes with corners. There are no prominent seams or stress-points, the pressure is distributed equally around the cylinder.
  • I think its just common sense, If they had edges, this increases the risk that the substance would leak. With it being circular, there are no corners to knock, and less chance that rust will form as there are no sharp angles for moisture to rest in.
  • it has to do more with ease of manufacture and also strength. There is more strength in their length (hey! that rhymes!) if it's cylindrical.
