  • By overexerting I assume you mean working a muscle group to failure(can not complete another rep without assistance)and forceing out another 1 or 2 reps with help. The logic behind this method is simply to push you muscle past there comfort zone. Because that is were the muscle fibers develop small tears, in those last two or three reps. As you may know it is the protien coming in to repair the tears that cause the muscle to grow and strengthen. If you body is comfortable doing 8 reps of given weight and that is all you do, there is little stress, no damage to repair, and no growth. One more thing, "overexerting" hints that you have overtrained, which causes much more harm than good. As a rule if a muscle group is sore from a previous workout (delayed muscle soreness can be felt more on the second and third day after a good W/K) do not train that muscle group until soreness is gone. I hope I havent thrown to much at you but will summerize with this- Never work a muscle that has been overexerted! Pushing past the last rep you can do will stimulate the growth process increasing size and strength, all in an effort to make it easier on the body the next time. Good luck!
