  • The primary reason for the Reformation was the desire of King Henry VIII to marry his concubine, Anne Boleyn, who had become pregnant. After numerous miscarriages and stillbirths, Henry's wife, Catherine of Aaragon, had been shunted off to live in near poverty on a remote estate. Since Catherine was a proven bad breeder, Henry was desperate and sent his emissary, Cardinal Wolsey, on repeated trips to the Vatican to have his marriage anulled. The Vatican refused since after all, Catherine was Henry's lawful wife (and a relative of Phillip of Spain). So Henry, in the hope that Anne would deliver a boy to inherit the throne, (after all, he needed a SON to inherit) declared himself the head of the church in England, married Anne, beheaded all nobles and friends who refused to sign an oath that Henry was head of the Church, and sacked and pillaged all the monastaries and convents. Some would say God had the last laugh, because Anne delivered a mere girl, who by the way, became Elizabeth I, one of England's greatest rulers. Henry, who after three short years grew tired of Anne only producing a girl and a miscarriage, promptly had her beheaded. All in all, since he died of syphillis quite out of his mind; not a ruler I would care to have as the first head of my church.
  • The Protestant Reformation was started in the 1500's by Martin Luther. He was very unhappy with the Roman Catholic Church and how it had became. One particular practice that he didn't like was when priests will sell "entrances to heaven" to people in exchange for money. Luther will later post all his complaints about the Catholic Church in the door of a Catholic church thus starting the Protestant Reformation.
